Expanding capabilities
The Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (under the Department of Energy) found the need to expand the manufacturing capabilities of the B321 complex and selected HED from a slate of qualified design firms.

The B321G facility is provided to support LLNL’s development efforts, which led to a demanding statement of work with restrictive budgeting. Challenges of the project included connecting the new building to an existing complex in a tight site and providing a more elegant facility than the existing industrial spaces while simultaneously keeping it a robust structure with a high level of sound isolation. The space required lab planning to allow a flexible space, supported at numerous locations by a suite of on-site specialty gases and liquids via a building-wide distribution system. HVAC control systems were required to be able to maintain the facility’s temperature at +/- 1⁰ C to support the various processes envisioned to be undertaken in the space.
